Nilgiris Project

Agro- Ecological Center in the Nilgiri Biosphere.

Currently Annadana is planning to locate and set up its new permanent base with an agro ecological center, in the Nilgiris district between 1800 and 2200 meters elevation.

The proposed purpose of this 20 acre center will be:

  • To produce a wider range of temperate vegetables seeds together with developing tropical and temperate fruit trees nursery and field crop resources like wheat and millets.

  • To set up new protocols and research on high yielding organic system of cultivation for those crops integrated in a multi-cropping farming system, together with documentation of comprehensive educational material, training and farmer’s capacity building programmes.

  • Host a seed bank, a training center and with a accommodation facility for farmers, technicians, seminars….and most of all, 19 acres will comprise of organic high yielding agro ecological multi cropping system of vegetables, cereals, fruits, medicinal plants, biomass plants and all plants susceptible to foster a productive sustainable and nutritive agriculture system.

  • To raise funds from national and international donors and implement large organic conversion programs for hundreds of local, small scale vegetable growers of the Nilgiri district. The district produces a large part of South Indian temperate vegetables but suffer from the conventional agriculture system. This has contributed to the deterioration of the local environment, the contamination of water and vastly damaging the health of people/ farmers through the high presence of pesticides, fungicides and fertilizers in their direct environment, food, water and air.

  • Annadana Nilgiri plans further to develop a agro ecology service unit, comprising of a trained professional team of local technicians like agronomists, horticulturists, garden managers, gardener whose role will be to support other NGO’s, charitable trusts, school, group of farmers, public or government institution in training, designing, fund raising, monitoring and implementing agriculture development sustainable projects for the benefit of small scale farmers, the environment and its people.

This project is in its construction phase, to be operational by February- March 2008.
